User Testing

The Usability Testing was conducted virtually with a time range between 30-60 minutes. Testers were guided through a series of ten tasks to complete with no assistance and to the best of their ability. They were also timed as they attempted to complete each task. In concluding the test, testers were asked to complete a System Usability Scale survey on Qualtrics.‍

Test Questions
  • Show me how you would find stories about the coins on this site.
  • If you wanted to play with coins and organize them, where would you go?
  • On the sort coin page, show me what you would do first.
  • Show me how you would sort the coins by material and size.
  • How do you compare the size of coin in Coin Sort?
  • Find out more information about an individual coin, including where it is minted.
  • According to the site's timeline, what event occurred in 300 BCE in Antioch?
  • What do the different colors on the timeline represent?
  • Where would you go to download a spreadsheet of the coin data from this site?
  • Where would you go to find the technical definition of word on this site?
Qualitative Findings
"Coins is a Pile" Page:
  • Most users voiced that it was difficult to compare different coins' data and details on this page.
  • Most users could not figure out how to scale coins to size.
  • Most coin enthusiasts had a difficult time finding specific coins on this page.
"Coins in a Time" Page:
  • Some users were confused by the significance of the different shades of colors on the timeline.

Other findings:
  • Most Subject Matter Experts thought they could download the coin datasheet from the "Toolbox"

Recommendations
  • Move "Coins as Data" page under the "Toolbox" tab instead and rename page to "Download Data."
  • On the "Coins in a Pile" page, include a feature that allows users to see a table of the sorted coins OR include a "Download Data" button that takes them to where they can download the data spreadsheet.
  • Specify what the different hues represent in the timeline’s key.
  • Use the term “scale to size” instead of “scale.”
